She sees towers in a city of silver and gold
The light of the sun shines warm and bright
Banners flying majestic for nobility bold
A gathering of revelry awaits her this night
Through mirrors of jewels she is beauty renowned
For a year she has waited to join with her love
To cast off her old life for a proud son she has vowed
She feels blessings beyond counting from the gods up above
Her betrothed has arrived with a gift of sweet flowers
There will be joyful merriment to celebrate this day
She smiles as she dances in her happiest hour
A life of delight undeserved some might say
Jealousy can form from the darkest of lies
It may also be hidden in threats once thought sated
A rival love spurned throws fire in her eyes
This smouldering echo of beauty now tainted
Now only in dreams does she see such sights
And only in memory can she bask in such bliss
Her eyes were taken by cruelties blight
For a blind old beggar such a tragedy is this
On damp and cold streets of filth she now lies
With only scraps of bread to comfort her heart
She knows not if she will feel a new sunrise
Her only companion is the chill of the dark

Beautifully poignant and wonderfully written. When the story in your poem started out, I thought what a lovely relationship. Then when her heart was broken, my eyes teared up a bit. I was not expecting that. Superb piece.
